We’re introducing Western North Carolina legislators and giving you the opportunity to get to know the people representing our region. Through a few questions, you’ll learn more about their backgrounds, what inspires their work, and the issues they’re passionate about.
Meet WNC legislator, Ralph Hise.
1. What inspired you to run for office?
“I have had the privilege of serving parts of Western North Carolina for 16 years. My commitment to running for additional terms became even clearer when our communities were devastated by Helene nearly two years ago. Going through that experience reinforced why I want to continue serving and representing the people of District 47. I want to help our communities rebuild, restore travel and tourism, support our local economy, among so many other things, to ensure that Western North Carolina is no longer left behind.”
2. How would you define a healthy community?
“A healthy community begins with economic opportunities for all residents in various industries whether that is with new businesses or individual jobs. It also means access to healthcare, especially primary care, where residents don’t have to travel hours to receive care. A healthy community should also have immediate access to emergency services as well as rehabilitation services.”
3. Why do you believe rural healthcare deserves special attention?
“Rural healthcare deserves special attention because too many rural communities are being left behind when it comes to access to quality healthcare. A big challenge is attracting and retaining healthcare providers in rural areas and ensuring they have the resources and incentives they need to stay and serve our communities. Access to transportation is more limited, which is a challenge in itself, not to mention that these challenges are compounded with loneliness and separation, an aging population, and fewer resources to address those needs than an urban area might have. All of these reasons, among others, are why rural healthcare deserves special attention and is a top priority for me.”
4. What do you love most about Western North Carolina?
“Western North Carolina has always been my home. There is no match for the communities, support systems, and resilience in Western North Carolina. This was proven when Helene struck. Neighbors helped neighbors, communities really pulled together and worked to get people food to eat, clothes to wear, and to try and help each other navigate this incredible tragedy. People who lost everything in the storm were still helping others, despite having lost everything themselves. It showed the true strength of the community—people coming together and supporting one another in the hardest of times. The resilience and compassion shown across Western North Carolina was remarkable and is something I will never forget. I am honored to serve the great people of the Appalachian region in the state legislature. I am grateful for the natural beauty that surrounds us—from our mountain landscapes and streams to the forests and trees that make Western North Carolina such a special place.”
5. Do you have a favorite hidden gem in WNC you’d like to share?
“A hidden gem in WNC is our high school sports throughout the region, whether that be football, basketball, wrestling, or one of the many other sports. There are strong rivalries between the teams, which often bring out large crowds and strong support from the community. Students benefit not just by being active, but it encourages them to compete and stay involved with the school and their academics. There is nothing like the “Friday night lights” that light up Western North Carolina skies. I have attended high school games since before I could even walk and would like to see more people take advantage of supporting the schools and students. This still remains one of my favorite things to do. There is a unique connection when parents and grandparents have played on the same fields.”
6. What’s one movie or show that you’ll always stop to watch if it’s on?
“While I’m truly a sci-fi fan, with a love of the modern adaptations of comics I grew up with, my favorite movie is Where the Red Fern Grows. I enjoy watching the story unfold and seeing the connection between Billy and his dogs. He shows great commitment and it is very meaningful.”
