Berenice Muñoz Gámez was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and moved to Haywood County, North Carolina, at the age of 9 to join her father, who worked on local farms. Though initially challenged by the language barrier, Berenice quickly adapted, gaining proficiency in English with the dedicated support of her English as a Second Language teachers. Her early experiences navigating life in a new country fueled her passion for helping others in her community, particularly those from communities of color.
Today, Berenice serves as a part-time community health worker with UNETE and a case manager supporting Haywood Christian Ministry’s participation in the Healthy Opportunities Pilot (HOP). Her work is rooted in housing development, where she helps bridge gaps in access to essential resources for marginalized communities. Berenice is not only bilingual but also a dynamic, energetic advocate, fully dedicated to uplifting individuals and families in need.
With a deep commitment to advocating for underrepresented communities, Berenice ensures her Hispanic heritage and culture are reflected in her work, connecting individuals with local resources and amplifying their voices. She began her role at Haywood Christian Ministry soon after the HOP initiative launched, bringing with her a tireless work ethic and a natural problem-solving approach. Whether she’s asking the right questions or stepping up to tackle challenges head-on, she is known for her hands-on, can-do attitude.
During the HOP enrollment process, Berenice has played a pivotal role in community outreach, spending countless hours building relationships and helping clients navigate housing and financial resources. In addition, she has collaborated closely with local markets, including Latino and farmers’ markets, to establish sustainable partnerships to support HOP’s produce prescription services. Her efforts ensure that Hispanic clients have access to culturally relevant produce while simultaneously supporting local Hispanic businesses.
